Teen Boarding Schools: Different Types For Different Treatments

If you’ve watched a movie made in Hollywood in the last twenty years, you may think that boarding schools are for either the super-affluent and elite, or one step away from prison.

The truth is that boarding schools across the nation are available for any number of reasons. Boarding schools can be geared toward academic excellence, behavioral health and substance abuse treatments, learning differences, ADHD, overweight and obesity, and much more.

Many therapeutic boarding schools specialize in learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD. Institutions such as the Academy at Swift River (www.swiftriver.com), Cedars Academy (www.cedarsacademy.com), Excel Academy (www.excelacademy.com), and the Oakley School (www.oakley-school.com), are specifically designed to educate teens with ADD/ADHD. Residential treatment programs are also offered in a boarding school setting. These schools specialize in psychological problems such as depression and substance abuse issues, and these settings will allow your child to receive the treatment they need without falling behind in their studies. Institutions such as the Aspen Ranch (www.aspenranch.com), SunHawk Academy (www.sunhawkacademy.com), YouthCare (www.youthcare.org), and Island View (www.islandview-rtc.com) ensure safe and organized treatment for your children with their mental health or substance abuse needs.

Other specialty schools are available as well. There are boarding schools specifically for girls, such as Copper Canyon Academy (www.coppercanyonacademy.com) and Bromley Brook (www.bromleybrook.com), which specializes in education and emotional growth of girls in a non-competitive environment. Boarding schools for boys offer education and treatment at such places like Stone Mountain School (www.stonemountainschool.com). Christian and faith-based boarding schools offer educational services in addition to ethical and moral values at such places like the Turn-About Ranch (www.turnaboutranch.com). Weight loss boarding schools have become more popular with the increase of obesity in the youth of our country. Schools such as Wellspring Academies (www.wellspringacademies.com) offer services including diet management, activity management, behavioral, residential, and academic.

Most, if not all of the above listed schools clearly state your child must be part of the decision to send them to a boarding school. These schools will not tolerate the disruption of their schedules because your child does not want to be there. You must have the full cooperation of your child before enrolling them into one of the programs listed above. Tuition and fees can become costly for these institutions, but they do offer student loans at what is described as reasonable rates.

Check out one of the links above, or contact your local resource center to determine if a specialty boarding school is in your area.

Pathological Eating Disorders and Poly-Behavioral Addiction

By James Slobodzien
According to the World Health Organization (June, 2005), “obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. This article purports that the poor prognosis in treating patients with obesity may possibly be due to not diagnosing and treating thier other poly-behavioral addictions simultaneously. This systematic underdiagnostic standard in the field of addictions could be due to a lack of diagnostic tools and resources that are presently incapable of resolving the complexity of assessing and treating a patient with multiple behavioral and substance abuse addictions. The Addictions Recovery Measurement System (ARMS) is proposed as a first step in fighting this global War on Poly-behavioral Addictions.
