Haymarket: Cornering The Market On Mental Health Services In Chicago

Haymarket, founded in 1975 by Ignatius McDermott and Dr. James West, was created as a not-for-profit agency and now provides comprehensive alcohol and drug treatment, as well as mental health services. Haymarket primarily serves the homeless, indigent, and ex-offender populations, but offers its services to all residents of Illinois.

Here are just some of the services they offer:

Athey Hall – A residential treatment center for chemically-dependent mothers. This treatment facility offers 24 hour support and allows the mother to bring up to two small children with her. This allows treatment to affect not only the mother, but the children as well.

Maternal Addiction Center – This program is geared toward chemically-dependent pregnant women, promoting drug free pregnancy and births, enhanced mother-child attachment, and returning mother and child to a drug-free environment after birth.

Life Skills – This program is designed to assist new mothers who have lost temporary custody of their child. It focuses on educational and vocational needs, with a goal of reuniting the mother with her child.

Alternative to Incarceration – Offered to both men and women, the Rehabilitation Confinement Program and the Work Release Alternative Program are offered as an alternative to incarceration. Patients are sent to these programs at the discretion of the sentencing judges.

Men’s Recovery Home – This treatment center offers men who have lost their jobs or family because of alcohol or substance abuse problems a place to stay while getting their life in order. Services such as group or individual therapy sessions, job counseling and placement, GED preparation and referral, and self-help involvement are offered. Patients pay a sliding scale fee until they become employed.

Mentally Ill Substance Abuse Programs (MISA) – This program is funded by the City of Chicago Department of Human Services. Patients are triaged for treatment and services are geared toward getting the patient back on their feet, both mentally and physically.

Haymarket Treatment Center was designed to be the first free-standing, social-setting detoxification center in Illinois. It currently sits in the middle of the area it strives to serve. Ignatius McDermott was very clear on his ideas of who needed help the most, and how they were to get it. Haymarket Treatment Center is located at 932 W. Washington, Chicago, IL 60607.

Pathological Eating Disorders and Poly-Behavioral Addiction

By James Slobodzien
According to the World Health Organization (June, 2005), “obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. This article purports that the poor prognosis in treating patients with obesity may possibly be due to not diagnosing and treating thier other poly-behavioral addictions simultaneously. This systematic underdiagnostic standard in the field of addictions could be due to a lack of diagnostic tools and resources that are presently incapable of resolving the complexity of assessing and treating a patient with multiple behavioral and substance abuse addictions. The Addictions Recovery Measurement System (ARMS) is proposed as a first step in fighting this global War on Poly-behavioral Addictions.
